Thou shall Derp by Zackira Thou shall Derp by Zackira
If you want serious coverage and opinion on the Derpy issue, please visit EqD www.equestriadaily.com, :icontompreston: or :iconpixelkitties:.

I think it's kind of sad that the aspect where mental and physical disabilities being equated is something that so many people have utterly missed. There's nothing wrong with having any kind of disability, but it's not very nice to suggest that disabilities must always come in sets... it creates all sorts of expectations for who people are and what they can do based on how they look or talk.

Derpy is offensive but Snails, the discorded pony and the barking insane one isn't? Kinda hypocritical in my opinion.

Yeah, no, the issue is not that she exists, the issue is that A) she's called by the derogatory name of Derpy and that B) she's made fun of for her physical disability and her physical disability is made a big deal.

Could somepony please explain this to me. Is it the way Derpy acted or the fact that she is named Derpy that people had the issue with?

It's her eyes. You have to realize, most of what Derpy is as a character today came about before she appeared the second time on TV. All she was was a background pegasus with derped-eyes and a wrinkly face that appeared for a total of four seconds in the background of the first episode.
With that the fandom gave her a name (Either Bright Eyes, Derpy Hooves, or Ditzy Doo), an occupation(mailmare), a bit of personality, and in general, life. The general consensus came to be that she was at the very least, possessing an entertaining form of autism. She might not be quite right, but she's fun to have around. She's not an idiot, she's just smart in ways that most ponies aren't, and hopelessly clueless in other ways. She doesn't take most things too seriously.
And we got all of this from an animation glitch. (Or an easter egg, depending on who you ask.) Well, and a scene where she said MUUFFIIIN as part of a crowd a few episodes later. That solidified what we had already come up with, though. By the first time she was actually intentional, which was Feeling Pinkie Keen, (although she got swapped in place of another pony that would have done the exact same thing,) we had already made her. Derpy isn't Hasbro's, she's ours. What she does on screen is a result of us at this point.
So, people didn't really react to what Hasbro came up with to put on screen, no. They reacted to what we made as a character. I'd be one of the first to admit that her first speaking role didn't go too well. (They could have bothered to tell the voice actor she was supposed to be a girl.) But she was ours even then. So when people saw a pony that wasn't quite on the same wavelength as the rest, people immediately pounced on it as making fun of autistics and the like. "What is a character like that doing in an entertainment show for kids?" With the answer of course being, "She's only living her life. Would you stop living it for her?"

Anyhow, Derpy is our name. Hasbro can't recognize it, and Lauren Faust pretty much did, but we came up with it.

If that wasn't really coherent, I don't think the actual matter isn't any more clear cut.

It's not the disability issue though, it's the 'Derp is shorthand for Retard in an insulting fashion' that's the issue.

Also the very episode she get named she was scripted to be called Ditzy or Ditzy Doo right up until the last minute when the script writer was asked to change it to Derpy as a nod to the fans.

And it was also largely fans that complained, not outsiders. Don't equate all the fanbase into support of the name Derpy.
Even my niece asked me why her name didn't fit. She's six, the exact market the show is aimed at to start with. If the very market base raises that question then it's likely a sign it shouldn't have happened like that in the first place.

Regardless, I like the comic. Especially Twilight's expression at the end.

The problem I have with it is that Studio B explicitly said that only the Itunes version of the episode would be edited. Then look what happened. Hub reruns? Edited version. Netflix Instant? Edited version. I was very disappointed in them, as, while they may not have meant to (in all likelihood, these decisions were out of their hands), they pretty much lied to us.

And yes, it was actually largely fans who took issue with the name (my brother, particularly, once said that "Ditzy Doo" sounds more like a pony name, and "Derpy" sounds like an Internet name... does that make any sense?) and voice (You'd think Tabitha would've known ahead of time that Derpy was female, though the original voice did still sound slightly feminine). It's worth noting, however, that a lot of those fans just wanted the voice changed and the name removed, and they were quite upset with the "correction" of her eyes, thinking that Hasbro (or whoever it might've been that mandated the change; let's not assume that Hasbro is a single entity) went too far there.

I was a fan of the original Ditzy Doo, and always will be. I was unmoved during the derpy fiasco because I saw it coming. We can do nothing about it, but learn from our mistakes as a community, writers and fandom alike. It was like a multiple choice question. The first answer chosen was the right one all along. Regarding the comic, Wat. I dont now, nor will I ever again even.

If you're using the "thou", then the appropriate following term should be "shalt", not "shall". And I never thought about it that way before. Even if Derpy was mentally disabled, is that a crime to have her in the Show? They do exist, ya know.

Hasbro is still using that ridiculous altered version for TV, iTunes, and I think even for the more recent DVDs. Not that I think they will, but they should just go back to using the original version. Retcons are almost always stupid.

"There's nothing wrong with having any kind of disability"

I'm going to have to disagree with that. There are problems with having a disability. People with disabilities have difficulties that others do not. That's what "disability" means. We have created glasses to cure people of bad eyesight. We have created cochlear implants to cure people of deafness. There are disabilities we have not learned to cure. Hopefully we will cure them some day. Until then, we just have to live with them.

There's nothing wrong with them PERSONALLY. Their problems are physical, that's the point. Even a person with mental health issues is simply suffering from a physical malady, so certainly that sort of person is no less a human being.
